Warsash SC Raymarine Spring Series
Race 6 Report
by David Crawforth
Testing Conditions greeted competitors for
the last race of the 2003 Spring Series...
Perhaps having taken
advantage of the previous day’s training during the class association
open day, the majority of boats got a good start at or very close to the
line. The first leg starting near Navigators & General, was to Prince
Consort; with the ebbing tide, the best plan was to head south for the
deep water before tacking. All boats started close near the committee
boat end, and with an even start, concentration was paramount to avoid
being forced to tack off or being rolled.
Prospero rounded the mark
first, taking advantage of a start close to the committee boat and a well
sailed leg, followed by Sigress, Retribution and Shadowfax. Scaramouche,
amongst the leaders during the first leg, disappeared at about this time,
retired with rumours of gear failure.
With 20 kts apparent, care
was required on the following broad reach. Sigress opted for white sails
with kite in reserve. Prospero got into difficulty and dropped her kite in
favour of her jib. Sigress took advantage, went for the kite and onto the
attack. Prospero made one attempt to luff, but to no avail and Sigress got
past.
A change of course to a
dead run at Sunsail, saw the leading boats stretching out in front. The
hottest action was now among the following pack. Retribution held on to her
third place as the fleet rounded East Bramble, the third mark.
Sigress went on to cross
the line first, being pushed hard by Prospero (stangely scored DNC), and
with Retribution gaining a 2nd. Right up to the finish, the fight
was still on between Summation, doing well with a No3 after trashing the No2
near the start; Cerefe, giving one of her rare appearances; and Shadowfax.
The overall series results
give Summation 1st (6 points), Sigress slipping into 2nd
on the final race (8 points), Scaramouche in 3rd (9 points) and
Retribution 4th (12 points). Elandra, under new ownership and
demonstrating perseverence and organisation to get through all the races
scores a 5th.
