JOG Offshore Championship
The Schroder Channel Race CAT 3
"Wavelength" one of only two boats to
finish
As the JOG fleet left the shores of the Isle
of Wight, headed across the English Channel on Saturday, a deceptively fresh
westerly breeze gave competitors high hopes for a leisurely breakfast in
Guernsey. Unfortunately light airs meant previous tidal calculations became
inaccurate while visibility was restricted by pea soup fog around the
Channel Islands rendering navigational skills critical.
With the J-Cup Regatta in St Peter Port
starting the following day, the size of the JOG fleet was greatly inflated
by the entry of yachts heading over to the Channel Islands for the event.
Although frustration led to a few retirements, the first boats were crossing
the finish line early afternoon. In class 5 only two boats managed to
finish, the first Blazer, a Laser 28 followed by Wavelength, Andrew
Glasgow's Sigma 33. In Class 4 it was an X342, Xarifa who won on handicap
and in Class 3 local Guernsey boat, Alice, Simon Henning's Mumm 36, took
both line honours and first overall.
In both classes 3 and 4, J-Boats scored third
and fourth places.
