GENESIS SAILS BY SOBSTAD SIGMA 33
NEW UPDATED FIBREPATH VERSION
For many years now we have been working on
programs to change the straight fibres in the Genesis sails to curves.
Curved fibres more accurately follow the load path because the loads in a
sail are not straight. In the past the straight fibre sails have followed
the load path in steps from panel to panel. This has always been a
compromise.
The new machinery is in place and in our
factory we have been successfully producing the curved fibre sails for over
a year now. Because stocks of the straight fibre sail have been exhausted
all new sails for the class will incorporate the improved curved Fibrepath
layout with immediate effect. Adjustments have also been made to the layout
to incorporate the curved fibres and minimise stretch thereby increasing
durability. No more old type straight fibre sails will be produced.
The shape of the sails and the weight remains
the same and therefore performance will not be affected. However we expect
the durability to be increased.
The membrane construction remains the same
except that the taffeta on the outside of the sail will now be on one side
rather than alternating from side to side. Thus removing the stripey effect.
This is a function of the new machinery and the way the fibre is laid.
At Sobstad we have rigidly maintained the one
–deign status of the class. But we have also continually improved the sails
over the years since 1979. We believe this has contributed to the success of
this great one design. The hull and rig may be a little dated now but the
sails have always been manufactured using the most up to date technology.
