Sigma 33 South Coast Newcomers Handicap 2007

Atilla, Rapscallion and Odalisque, all could win

The Newcomers Handicap got off to a slow start this year, with no eligible entries taking part in the Warsash Spring series. The Spring Bank Holiday regatta in May gave Les Stagpool’s Rapscallion a handy 10.5 points, putting her in the lead.

The Round the island race enabled two more boats to chalk up some points; with Rapscallion adding to her total and retaining the lead, and James Brown’s Atilla and Trevor Prince's Sigmaretta scoring 10 and 18 points respectively.

With three eligible boats entering Cowes week, Atilla added to her score, and M Wood and A Brown’s Odalisque, and Joost Van Der Bijl’s Mrs Jones scored 76 and 23 points respectively, opening up the competition.

The Class Association’s own four- and two-race regatta days have added to Odalique’s score whilst Juan Moreno’s Salamander and Peter Boereboom’s Chaser have chalked up some points. As there is one race yet to run, next Saturday, the final positions are in the fate of the gods - this could be a good opportunity for yachts to make up some handy extra points.

The Hamble River Railing Club Winter Series, starting in a fortnight, is another good opportunity to gain points from the crucial third race / series, which is needed to qualify to win the Newcomers Handicap. Odalisque has thrown the gauntlet down with an early entry into the series, and unless some of the other leaders get a result in this, or in the final regatta day, she will romp home to victory.

The South Coast Newcomers Handicap, for the Mithril Trophy, was first run in 2002.
It was formulated to give new Sigma33 owners a level playing field on which to compete in their first three years of ownership. Scores are extracted from the overall results in each of six main South Coast competitions. These are then multiplied by a weighting (1, 1.5, or 2, corresponding with 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of membership of the class association). The weighted scores for each owner’s best three results are then computed.
