At last. Much less wind, much more
sailing. The light, mainly SSW’erly, breeze was just sufficient for the Race
Officers on both courses to complete the set and a half of races that the
first two weeks cancellations had caused. On the Blue Group course the
combined IRC 1 & IRM, IRC 2 and Bowsprit classes, were given two short
races, whilst the other three starts had a longer single race. Next week the
procedure will reverse and, given fair weather, by the end of the series all
races will have been sailed.
There were a number of individual
recalls during the first sequence of starts. IRC 2 suffered most with nine
boats being scored OCS. The IRC 1 / IRM class had the closest finishes of
the morning. Nick & Anne Haigh, Farr 40 Too Steamy, were first across the
line 16 secs ahead of Andrew Ritchie’s Corby 41.5 Minx. This winning margin
was reduced to three secs on handicap. Behind these two the Ker 11.3s of
Nick Hartshorn & Hannah Harwood, El Gringo, and Anthony Richards’ Minnie the
Moocher could not be separated at the line and, with identical handicaps,
they tied for 3rd place.
The most excitement of the day
occurred at the East Brambles buoy, which was being used as a leeward mark.
Various small motorboats from a Portsmouth fishing club were anchored in the
vicinity. There was no real conflict except for the one boat that had chosen
his pitch directly upwind from the buoy. Violent gestures were followed by
colourful language and the episode climaxed when he hurled part of his catch
into the cockpit of Michael Steven’s Swan 46, Marinero
. On the White Group course P.R.O.
Peter Knight had to fit in three races for each of the four classes. Honours
were divided evenly throughout the classes. Ian Southworth, having moved
from the 707 class, was sailing a 1720 but at present does not have the boat
speed of the leading group. One of the newest additions to the Sportsboat
range is the Laser SB3. This year there are 22 entries in the class and Glen
Bourke, sailing Musto, was the most successful helmsman overall in the White
Group winning the 2nd & 3rd races in this class
. With one more week’s racing before
the Easter break everyone is hoping that the present good weather will
continue to enable more races to be recovered
